IS IT ME OR DOES IT SEEM LIKE ALMOST EVERY WOMAN SOUTHERN DANCER HAVE A CROWN NOW A DAYS?

I REMEMBER SEEING CROWNS ONCE IN A WHILE ON SOUTHERN DANCERS BUT IT SEEMS ALL THE WOMEN AND EVEN THE LITTLEST GIRLS HAVE THESE BIG ELABORATE CROWNS?

I'M NOT KNOCKING THEM JUST DON'T REMEMBER SEEING THIS SO MUCH? ONE GIRL I TALKED TO AT STANFORD SAID SHE HAD 4 DIFFERNT CROWNS?

Are crowns old school? I see even the older ladies wear them. Even some of those dancers gots a lotta rhinestones. Are they old school? Rhinestones, I mean. Jus asking. I don't know, so I thought I'd ask.

I know exactly what you mean. I am a princess, and at pow wow's that I am expected to do a give away it gets confusing as to who is a princees and who is wearing a crown. Now dont get me wrong sometimes it looks great but Sometimes I think it is just a little much. No offense to any who do wear them.

I HAVE NEVER SEEN A RHINESTONE CROWN. THE ONES I'VE SEEN HAVE ALL BEEN BEADED.

A FEW OF THE CROWNS I HAVE SEEN HAVE BEEN SO TALL TOO MAKES THEIR HEAD LOOK RIDICULOUS.
BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE I HAVE SEEN SOME GORGEOUS BEADWORK AS WELL.

TO ME I LIKE SEEING THE DROP FEATHERS FROM THE HAIR WITH NO CROWN. THAT LOOKS PRETTY AND TO ME IT "SOFTENS" THE LOOK OF THE DANCER ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAVE A NICE FLUFFY PLUME HANGING DOWN.

Nowadays the crown is made as part of most southern ladies regalia. I used to only see princesses wear them, then southern buckskins started wearing them, now even cloth dancers wear them. I've been a southern cloth dancer since I was 2 and I've danced with a crown for only 6 years but I feel really incomplete without my crown! I expect a crown to be made with the rest of my beadwork and so do alot of ladies out there in powwow country. I think it's just becoming one of those fashion-trends, you know, rhinestones and shiny beads jus to catch the judge's eyes when you're out there in the arena with 30 other girls!

Most of the crowns I have seen are just wonderful. I think all the dancers look so pretty with or without them.
As long as they have something in their hair or on their head that helps bring out their outfits.
I don't care for the ones that are really tall and make them look like they are 7 inches higher. Thats a bit too much.
One question though? If the woman does not wear a crown does she wear the feathers in the back of the head as well as the side of the head? I have seen women wear it this way sometimes and soemtimes not. Is it up to that individual? Blessings to you all.

I have three crown because I have three full sets of beadwork. One is old from when I was a teenager and that crown is kind of small in the front. The other two are taller but not giant by any means. I have been a princess several times but wear them now becasue I like they ay they look with my outfits. I usually only wear a crown in the evening... Ocassionally in the day but mostly in the evening. I wear drop feathers in the day. That is just me. But most all of my souther dancer friends do the same.

Crowns, Crowns and more crowns

Con't know too much about plains stuff, but here in the East the women and girls in Woodlands regalia wear crowns (we call 'em headbands) as a part of their regalia. These are usually done in white or colored transparent beads on velveteen in a raised fashion that is typical of Iriquois beadwork and are very elegant. Patterns are usually flowers, strawberries, birds or turtles.

Princess Crowns usually have the designation of the year and society or tribe that confered the honor on it somewhere. Or are made of silver and may or maynot have a stone on them.

I understand that the wearing of headbands by other nations was started by the Cheyanne and spread from there. These are the more ornate crowns with the multicolored beadwork on them, but the beadwork is flat and the colors of the beads is relied on to represent the object depicted.

I think both kinds look great, but the Woodlands headband is more flattering to the older dancer!

I have 2 crowns...and i kinda use them in a way to represent my family. On one of my crowns...it tells a lil story about howmy clan originated...and the other...kinda combines the colors of both my clans....so thats how i see it...representing families.
