    I Don't Get It

If you are indeed Colville and Fon du Lac Ojibwa then you should have an idea what your tribal dresses look like. If you honestly don't know, talk to your family and attend a couple of tribal dances. That will answer all your questions.

Thanks for your input. I agree totally with the whole entitlement thing. That is why I wanted to make sure that what I was wanting to make would be considered Northern because I do have a Northern Style Buckskin dress and have been allowed to dance that style and I consider two my tribes to be Northern (Colville and Fon du Lac Ojibwa). I do not want to make a dress that would be considered a Southern style dress because I am not from a Southern tribe. I would feel uncomfortable dancing a style that is not wholly my own. Thanks again.

I would like to have a black velvet dress made with long buckskin fringes hanging from the 'sleeves' to the floor. Would this be considered cloth style and would it be northern or southern? I know this is all subjective but I am interested in others' opinions. Also what else is specific to the cloth style? Thanks.

What you are describing is a version of Northern Tradish, sometimes calles Northern Cloth. If you are entitled to it, wear it. If it's not your tribal style of clothes or the right wasn't given to you, then don't.
Glad to hear that you have recovered from your accident and are wanting to dance again. But this is not a style that everyone is entitled to - just my opinion.

    Question on Northern/Southern protocol
    by bzybzymom
My children are enrolled Sioux and I'm Cherokee, and not yet enrolled although working on that and hopefully by next pow wow season I'll be enrolled too. My daughter and I are dancing jingle right now, but would like to change to traditional buckskin. (my knees cannot take jingle since I'm fatter now)....

    Contemporary as opposed to traditinal

I dont know if this has been brought up before.
I know that there are many differences in both northern and southern categories by tribal tradition. And that a person should make her dress according to her peoples tradition.
But what if the northern/southern plains dress is not that persons...

    Buckskin designs
    by cherokeemom06
I have a couple of cloth dresses and have finally decided to put the time, effort and money into my first buckskin dress. I tried to buy one (don't yell at me, I have two small kids and finding time to cut all that fringe was a bit daunting! ) but everytime I almost made a deal with someone,...

    What I have decided
    by Guest
I figured that you may want to know why I have been asking all of the questions that I have been asking as of late. I have had a hard time, "deciding" what to dance and the like. Kind of like I could not make up my mind, "so to say". If I had caused any "anger" or bad feelings...

    Northern AND Southern Dress...

I had a quick question I wanted to get some advice on.

My knees and ankles are shot-I couldn't dance to save my soul anymore, but I wanted to put together a Man's Traditional outfit.

I happen to have relatives from the North and relatives from the South and I want to respect...
