  • Tear dress turn-dip?

At the last powwow i went to in austin (tx) there was this lady and her two daughters in tear dress in the cloth dance, and they did this dip thing...
they always danced side by side (each daughter on both sides of momma) and during some (but not all) songs they turned ever so slightly on the dip, taking advantage of the full back of the tear dress, making just barely sway as it touched the floor...
it was very pretty, though afterwards i didn't manage to get to them to ask about it.
has anyone else ever seen this?

i think what you are talking about is what all southern traditional dancers do

I've shared an image of an Omaha Dentalium Shell Dress. I was wondering what your thoughts were on this since I normally see women from northern plains wear these kinds of dresses.

      Deerskin Strap Dress
      by laughingcrow
Has anyone seen a traditional two deerskin strap dress worn at any pow wows? This style of dress was common among the Cree, Ojibwe and Metis people of the Great Lakes in the past but sadly, I have never seen a contemporary version of one worn in the circle. I have heard of people wearing a cloth strap...

      new dancer, dress
      by my3kids
My daughter wants to dance Jingle style this year. I am so happy that she has an interest in our heritage! I only wish I was taught more about it as I was not raised with very much heritage celebrating.

I have a question about the dress - does the entire dress need to be made by hand?...
