  • "New' Old Style Cherokee Outfit

    I finally completed my outfit
I did do all my own sewing, had help cutting out the matchcoat, skirt and leggings.
but I did the rest and sewing myself

Yes I am very proud of it it's taken almost a year to do -
I was very SCARED to sew, very scared!!!
My Cousin Donnie gave me the silver

This is a tradiationally correct outfit
not an Historically correct - they would be in Blue or Red Wool

Anyone else have a picture to post here -we'd love to see who else has made this style

    I love green........
I am the one on the right
My Sister is in Yellow -aint' she pretty??!!!!

You two look great! I really like your color choices.

I'll put mine up in a bit, Okwataga. I'm going to make the corrections you mentioned, then have Mr. neling take another photo.

              Neling, that is beautiful.

When I was in NC recently, I saw more of the other style then this one. This one is really nice too.

I am so impressed by the work both of you have done on your regalia. The effort shows in the results-- great workmanship, color, balance, design, etc.. I have not yet seen this style in powwows in my area (DC/MD/VA), but will be looking forward to seeing this IRL.

Excuse me, I hope ya'll Ladies don't mind me poking my nose in here.

I just wanted to say that this dress looks real different from our Cherokee Ladies old style Tear Dresses, and imho, a lot more attractive!

Is this the new dress that was recently brought out by our Eastern Band?
Because of our treaty status, the distinction of being 'Cherokee' is a status of citizenship, not a racial issue.

Has anyone heard this before? is it true?? because she is still growing I wanted to just...

I would like a dancing outfit for my 14 month old son. I saw one for sale for an 18 month old, but it was $250. I can't really afford that and am wondering if anyone has any ideas for me. Perhaps I could make one out of suede fabric, but I don't actually know how.

What components Make a Tradtional Outfit

I'm talking about the actual pieces that make up your outfit. I was recently told that Northern Traditional Dancers were supposed to wear aprons that cover hip-to-hip. Now, I've been wearing a tradecloth apron for years that doesn't cover hip-to-hip. And I've had a few boys ask me pointers on dancing...

Some outfits have been handed down from a family member. Others have been value beyond dollars because of personal reasons. Others like mine, have been specifically made for the dancer.

What would you do if a collector, museum or powwow dancer offered to buy your outfit?
