Matchcoat Question
I love your regalia as I love green. I first saw you at MTSU this year. You really inspired me to get my new/old regalia completed. I have one question: Is the matchcoat draped over the right or left shoulder? In my research I saw it draped over the left shoulder, so that is how I wore mine. Traditional lady - who cares what the judges like or not - well I mean we should but - you wore your traditional outfit and that's what matters!!!! you looked good!!!!
and if they do not know traditional outfits - then they should not be judging....
I knew someone that did not understand a Potowatomi( please excue my spelling) dance style and actually made funof it until she was corrected then she really felt bad!!
but anyway

Traditional Lady - which ever shoulder you prefer..... it's just a matter of taste, in my world it's easier for me to do things when it was over my right shoulder
kind of like people and scarves... you see some that wear it wrapped all aroudn their necks and then others make a loop and it hangs down the front

I was wondering that as well about the shoulder, I was wondering if it had anything to do with being rite or left handed,that was untill Okwataga explaind, sorry to jump in ladies....I got a fevah! And the only cure is more cowbell!!!Comment

I am from the North East and made my regalia last year. I had no idea the EBCI had adopted the new dress. I had seen it up there on the rez. Glad cuz them tear dresses are not very attractive- makes me look dumpy. I'm not Cherokee, so I wouldn't wear it. I just researched what was traditional for the Algonquin/ Abenaki and made this myself. I sew ribbon shirts and dresses, so it was pretty easy. Very interesting reading this topic on Cherokee clothing ! My mom used to make and wear the tear dresses . I prefer the look of the older style wrap-around skirt with the blouse - just "easier" style of clothing to make ( for me anyway , my mom was expert seamstress and it's alot of work to make a tear dress ...all those gathers ! ) .Comment

I am making this and a Eastern Woodlands caped blouse in the next few weeks. I think that this is going to turn out way better than my tear dress that is still in various stages of dis-assembly in my scrap box.....My hubby is Lenape so the eastern is a bow toward him and his people, and I can't wait to dance in a traditional style Cherokee dress. I will make it out of cotton since I am allergic to wool...

Ok I am about to start work on my traditional cherokee regalia and I have one question... How much material for the matchcoat? I have an idea but I am not sure??? Any thoughts here ladies???
Oh and I have managed to get the pattern cut out for the eastern woodlands top....Thankful for the blessing from the Creator in my life!!!!

My 4 year old wants to dance fancy shawl, I was going to buy a second hand outfit but was told that you should not get a used outfit because it may have bad medicine, and should just have a new one made instead. I'm talking about the actual pieces that make up your outfit. I was recently told that Northern Traditional Dancers were supposed to wear aprons that cover hip-to-hip. Now, I've been wearing a tradecloth apron for years that doesn't cover hip-to-hip. And I've had a few boys ask me pointers on dancing...04-06-2003, 12:45 PM -
Some outfits have been handed down from a family member. Others have been value beyond dollars because of personal reasons. Others like mine, have been specifically made for the dancer.
What would you do if a collector, museum or powwow dancer offered to buy your outfit?
