Ok, I'll try. Most girls tend to keep their shawls over their shoulders with while holding it at the waist. I have seen giels take their shalws off and fold it like a tradish dancer and dance with it over one arm.

When dancing it you do this kinda skip step. No big leaps or steps but you keep your feet close to the ground adn almost skip along going in an S shape.

On honor beats some girls will bow their heads while doing the step in place or doing a back step.

The swing of the fringe and stopping with both feet on the ground is important. ( Duh, as always)

If you don't stop on time, it's really hard to fake it with these songs.

You just have to watch and imitate to get the step. After you figured out your basic step, make it unique to you.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Before you attempt to beat the odds, make sure you can survive the odds beating you!

Why do some people bother breathing when you know their brain isn't getting the oxygen?

Have you ever seen Crow style women's traditional? That's kind of how your s'pose to do it. If you ever get chance try and find out how they do it and watch them like find a video or something. Some ppl call it the "original" crow hop. And it's kind of more like a slide and not a hop.. lol :)

I do it the same way with a slide and a step. I've been all over, almost everywhere but the coasts, and still I have not heard how the men are supposed to dance to this kind of song. And it hasn't been for lack of asking either ;)

                by Montanaa
So I finally convinced my mom to let me learn the culture. She is even going to take some regalia-making classes with me too but I'm going into pow wow dancing classes alone.

My question here... how do I calm my nerves and what should I expect? I do struggle with identity issues as I'm...

                Double Beat
                by nessadawn25
Okay, so I've seen double beat done mostly two ways:
One with both feet flat and stopping in place. The second, on tip-toes turning and such? I personally like both, how do are all of you doing your double beat these days?
Oh yeah and do you keep your shawl on or hang it on your arm?

I guess I'll help start off the new forum with a few general observations/questions that have been posed to me / posed by me....

Awhile back (maybe a year or two) I was at a powwow with 2 Chicken dancers. The MC decided it would be a good idea to feature them to the spectators (non-comp...
