  • Duck & Dive

I would just like an opinion on this, I am in no way involved with it just seeking some input. Up here in Vancouver there is going to be a New Years Pow Wow, our local Pow Wow web site was going to offer prize money for the winner of the ladies fancy shawl dance including the duck and dive. Now because of some complaints that the duck and dive is used by certain tribes they are going to have to drop the duck and dive. Would this be a correct statement and why would certain tribes complain?
Just a white guy being curious.

The ladies fancy shawl is still happening without the duck and dive,
that other thread sure explained what I was asking but with a whole lot of contraversy and a little mud slinging. Pow Wow B.C. was probably sponsoring the dance at the wishes of some of the females who wanted that part of the dance included, so I don't think it was right to dump on the sponsor, it is real gracious of them to put in the prize money for the dance, way to go Glenn.

        POW WOW

I feel a great cultural event is the pow wow. The word pow wow was first an

Algonquin word. It was first pronounced Pau-wau in Algonquin lanuage. Pau-Wau first

meant a gathering of spiritual leaders. I was told that the Europeans misunderstood...

Is it okay to do a shawl in the shape of a butterfly? I just wanted to know in case it might be disrespectful.

        The Right to Wear Items
        by CEM
Here is a post from the N. Traditional Headgear board:

Somebody in this forum made a very good point in that all dance stuff is probably tied in some way to societies/clans. Because of this a dancer needs the "right" to wear or use it. I never really thought about this until I...

        Changes in the dance style
        by tribaltagz
Way back in the day when my uncles paid my way to straight dance I was taught that there were movements that I couldn't do. One was I couldn't place my tailstick on the ground. Another was I couldn't turn in a complete circle because that signified retreat. I was put in by my Kiowa uncle who was married...
