i'm wondering what the folks out in powwows.com land think about women that are plus size dancing fancy shawl? I was told once that i shouldn't dance fancy because i got too fat, but i was still in good shape and can still kick up my legs. And it didn't stop me from dancing fancy, but what do you folks think about this??

get on out there girl....
now see whats up with that!! that aint right.....i know some [email protected] shawlers who are not tiny for sure and they can still jam. you dance if you want to...i think its sad that there are also some super jingle dress dancers who have lots of stamina and awesome footwork who never get looked at by judges because they arent skinny.
yeah its important to be in shape enough to be able to dance without keeling over and to feel good about your dancing but i dont think only skinny girls should win!!! there are some thin girls out there dancing who are still huffing and puffing when they dance. theres alot of atheletically(or heavier) built indian women out there who can jam--why do we always find some way to make people feel bad about stuff like this...
so i say girl you get out there and show 'em how its done.....

When I was a teen in the 80's; one of the best fancy dancers in Oregon was a lady who was not thin. She was built sturdy("built like a **** brick house," as my hubby says); she danced with beaded sticks instead of shawl and boy was she good. I believe as long as you are healthy and can handle the intensity of fancy, why not do it? People should get their heads out of their @#$%[email protected]

Hey thanks
Yeah i guess what all you people are saying is true eh. I have danced Fancy before i could walk (in my walker i danced) but i've never really travelled everywhere just around Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Yeah it was someone in my family that told me that fancy dancers shouldn't be fat. But they made it sound like i was this huge person when i'm not, i'm just bodacious, lol. j/k I'm not into competing anymore because when i go to these contests pow wow, during grand entry i already know who's going to place and it sure ain't me, lol. Anyway thank you for the reply's folks and i will probably come up with another good topic another day or we can keep talking about this one!

There's no excuse for them to tell you that you can't dance. Since you are in good physical condition, you should be out there dancing it up girl"Liberty is the one thing you can't have unless you give it to others."

If you dance because your spirit moves and your heart sings it is nobody's business what you weigh and they are out of line expressing an opinion on the matter. Dance!Damme ape’semmai, "Andabichidaiboonee’ gimmadu’i.Wihyu memme hainjinee’ nahandu’i. Enne wizha sudei’ tsaangu mabizhiahkande," mai.

well.....you should be dancing because YOU want too and not because of what everyone else thinks. Competing or not competing just dance. That's why we were brought out in the 'circle' in the first place, not to place, not to win, and certainly not just for money. We were brought out because of our love for dancing, respecting who we are, the ability to be able to move/dance (since there are ones who can't dance), and how we all represent our communities/families in a good way. So who cares about what every one thinks, whether we are 75-300 lbs, pimple faced, have only one arm, green hair, or if your a siamese twin. The fact that your are out there dancing, thats the most important thing. Because the pride you hold in your heart will shine through your dancing. Believe me, people respect that more than if you were Tyra Banks in a fancy shawl dress. Remember beauty lies inside not what is on the outside. Stay native beautiful gurl and just keep dancing........You have crossed my path, You will never be forgotten......

I'm a thick girl too, and when people make comments to me like that, here's what I say: "Yeah she might be a hundred pounds lighter than me, but I can sit on her as$$ and then what's she gonna do?"The true meaning of life........
Life is all about a$$; you're either covering it, laughing it off,
kicking it, kissing it, busting it, trying to get a piece of it, or
behaving like one.
