  • Different types of dances

I was wondering what different types of fancy shawl dances are there. I was at a pow wow this weekend and saw a contest dance where the girls seemed to be walking around the circle to the beat. What kind of dance is this? Thanx

Well you have your straight dance, which i'm assuming that's what it was and then you have your crow hop.

The different types of fancy shawl dances:

Straight- the normal beat with basic step
Crowhop- crowhop beat and skipping for dancing
Old Style- same beat as the jingle slide, and the step is like striding
Shake- same beat as a sneak up, kicks and spins and stepping really fast for the first part of the beat, and either a straight or crowhop beat after.

      I hope that helps.

From your descriptions; sounds like the fancy dancers were doing a Crow hop.

I think thats a "double beat" beat...which isnt the same as a jingle side step... its old style crow hop- ask one of the crows on here to explain better than i can

I have a question about Shake style. I've seen a video on you tube called women's fancy sneak up. What's the chances that you'll get this style at a contest and if so, will they call it women's shake or sneak up? Also, men's sneak up tells a story, are the women supposed to tell a story with theirs too?

Ok... I coudl be wrong.. but i thought the Sneak up was usually done by Men's Traditional Dancers.

And a ruffle/shake song was men's fancy (and womens' fancy) and i know that was pretty popular to get back in the 80's n early 90's 4 the women.. I think i'ts starting 2 come back again :D :D

Different types of fancy shawl dances

Straight song, crow hop, double beat, and trick song. ( its a song that changes the tempo of the song at different points of the song)(guess that might be what some are referring to shake or ruffle song)

Sneak up traditionally was a men's song from what i have been taught by my grandmother. However women can dance a sneak up song too. I remember as a little girl watching the women stay closer to the arbor with the men in the middle. From what I remember the women used to dance in place during a sneak up. But that doesn't happen that much anymore because as times change so do traditions slightly.

Ok... I was wondering if I could get some help from all the other fancy shawlers. A few weeks ago, I was at Fraser Valley pow wow. They had a fancy shawl contest for all the fancy's from juniors to adults. Thye had one song, and chose 15 dancers. I was one of the 15. They did a fast and fancy song,...

recently i've noticed that fancy dancers are given the double beat crow hop to dance to where they dance "crow style" crow hop... as opposed to the single beat where they dance more "fancy style" crow hop including more jumping around, footwork, and movements.
                            now this is...

are fancy shawls ready for the double beat?

What does everybody think about the double beat for fancy shawl? How long will it take before it becomes commonplace like the crow hop? I first the double beat August 2002 in South Dakota at the Crow Creek Fair in Fort Thompson during a teen girls all around contest song. I guess it means a lot of...

ok when I was growing up in the 70's in the midwest I heard of a "new" style of dance which they called modern crow.
