i have a friend who used that sticky sewing tape and lined her ribbons up on it and then closed the two parts of her shawl up and then sewed it. lol i did my daughters one by one, the lenght i think is up to you although someone else might have a better answer for you on that one, you just want to make sure that when you are at rest with it around the shoulders that the end fringes. oops sorry my ride is here, i will get more into it tomarrow as there is no puter at home.A LABYRINTH OF FINGERS POINTING BLAME

forgot to mention....

I'm a short gal, so I didn't need that much, but in any case, it depends on your shawl too. I don't think that there is really a proper way to measure a shawl esp. fancy shawl, because you will be holding your arms up, and spinning, and moving your shawl as you dance. Ribbons can be tricky to work with. Good luck and hope your shawl turns out the way you like it to be.

There is also a product you can get at Wal Mart in the sewing section called Frey Check or Frey Stop or something along that line. When you make your ribbon, cut the ends at an angle, that will help to delay the fraying process. But, if you have the Frey Stop, apply a small amount across the bottom of your ribbon (where you cut) and it will not frey on you. I've been dancing my current shawl for about 3 years now, and have had no problem so far. (although my shawl is to long and I have to fold it under on top for dancing-I guess thats a project for the winter time. Im gonna dread taking off the ribbon on the sides and redoing it to line it all up right, but, its something that needs done.)
Good Luck, and have fun Dancing!

The Frea Check stuff you have to wait for it to dry and sometimes it came off, melting works faster and better.
I was taught how to make "pockets" where you hold onto the shawl, fold over the material a few inches and sew the side, it helps your hands from getting cramped, helps little ones hands
hang onto the shawl until they learn to put under their arms, keeps big ones hands warm at night dancing.
