  • Beadwork Design Ideas?

I was asked to do a fancy shawl cape for someone. I'm a old time trad guy, and all I really know how to do is old designs. I think I have a really good design set up, but I'd like to hear from you guys.

What is popular today? What designs are good to use? What do you like to see? I

    coop,

Here's an elementary way to make a design that works...

    1. Cut the back of the cape to the exact size that the person requests.

    2. Fold the design in half.

    3. Determine the color of the beads for the background and the actual design.

    4. Make a primary design that contours to the curve of the lower part of the cape. (You can experiment with geometrical, curved and floral designs).

    5. Cut the design out while still folded.

    6. Open it up and you will have two sides of a matching design.

    7. You can make smaller secondary designs to glue to the primary designs or background.

    8. Determine what colors you want to make each design for a mock up.

    9. Glue all your colored designs together to see what it looks like to scale and use it as a pattern.

I hope this helps. Good luck beading.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

i think fancy shawl is pretty much all about 'flash' these days. i wouldnt skip the old school designs, but how would they look in the newer metalics and ceylon beads?

I am also a huge fan of old style designs! I would just ask the person who has commissioned my work what they prefer. I imagine that they like your style, since they asked you to bead for them.
I dance fancy shawl and the contemporary designs I am more attracted to are the multi colored floral patterned, what's the opposite of complimentary colors? Anyways those ones, I really like them, cut glass is the best, and rhinestones are popular too, sparkly sparkly sparkly!
AND I just wanted to say I am a huge ol' skool fan :P
If I am my own worst enemy, should I not also be my own best friend?

Hi, everyone. I have a question. I have been asked to do the complete beadwork for a fancy shawl outfit, hair ornaments, yolk, moccasins and leggings. What should I charge for this, does it matter if the design is complicated? I do a lot outfits and I am a good beader, but it is so slow and I...

              by chirapachegurl
I have tried and tried so now I'm gonna ask: how in the world do you make the french curves on shawls, and the tribal kind of looking designs? i'm able to make small designs but to make them huge to fit a shawl is very time consuming and i just can't get it so that it comes out looking perpendicular...

              Mixing Beads
              by BeadMan
In response to the thread on favorite beads, I'd like to spin in a slightly different direction and ask about mixing beads. BLACKBEAR used "matte with luster" beads, TIGGER uses "regular with translucent," ALASKASHADOWWOLF uses "translucent for the outline and opaque for the...
