  • Shawl size

Hi, I would like to make my own shawl. Could someone tell me what the correct length would be including the fringe? I often see the shawls are 60" and the fringe 13" or 14". Not sure if that total size is supposed to be 73" or if the fringe in included the the length of 60". Thanks so much.

Are you talking about for fancy or traditional? That makes a difference.

      Shawl Size

I thank you for your response, I'm sure I mean the traditional shawl, one that is folded and draped over the arm. I wanted to get the length correct. Thank you again.

It really depends on the person alot of the Traditional ladies I now make half shawls and the fringe is longer. So it just depends on if your ever planning on wearing it from some reason, say your at a powwow and just have your shawl so you can go in intertribals, or if you using it only for dance. Then the half shawl works because it's lighter on your arm. To answer your question about measurements most I've always been told to measure your arm lenght from finger tip to finger tip to get the masurment that works for you. The fringe lenght is also more what you like. I hope this helps you make your decision.

          OK, got it

I understand, I will use it for intertribal dancing and it will be used as an arm shawl. I gather from what your saying that it is a personal decision and I will use the tip to tip measurement as a guide. You have been helpful, thank you.

Yes, as mentioned, the width of the shawl is from fingertips across the shoulders to the other fingertips. The length varies but usually falls somewhere between your upper thigh and your knee. (Cover the caboose!) Old-time shawls were folded double but you can do just one layer. Less to fringe and lighter to carry. The length of fringe is personal preference.
