  • Crouching Dancer/ Hidden Butterfly

When Fancy Shawlers are called in for exibition before song starts the dancers crouch down and cover their head with shawl and stay there until after the first break in song.

Ive seen some shawlers do this and other not.

    Whats your preference?

Never did it. Once saw some girl do it and one of the other fancy shawl dancers (very nicely) asked her what she was doin and she said somethin like what you were talkin about with the chrysalis. She told her how the dance originated (not the butterfly storey). But the young Woman walked off in a huff thinkin she already knew it all. Sad...and uninformed.

Surprisingly, that is something I have not seen yet in my neck of the woods. We have seen lots of hoky stuff and like the person you mentioned have tried to correct them politely but the advice is usually recieved with hostility.

I've only been dancing for a short while and since I haven't got any NDN roots (none that I can find) I've been learning as I go. So here's a question I have and lots of feedback is appreciated. What do you think of using a wolf or coyote pelt instead of a shawl? I've seen several women doing this...

I have a question. Quite a while ago I've heard a song that the womens fancy danced to. It started off as a crow hop and then went on to be a fast and fancy. Does anyone know the type of song this is? I've only heard it once when I was like 13 (6 years ago)

I just got the GON '09 DVD and I saw a shawl dancer out there in competition with no shawl, only a scarf in her hand. Does anyone know anything about this?
