  • Gripping shawl/showing hands

    How's everyone doing?

I was taught that you don't want to show your wrists and hands when dancing (as little as possible). My boyfriend thinks that I hold too much of my shawl when I dance. I grip it about half way down the sides and then hold it so that my arms are perpendicular to my body when I'm standing still.

    Where do you grip yours?

I've never heard about the showing of hands being frowned upon? But maybe thats particular to some tribe.
And how your holding your shawl is good, you don't want to hold it in a manner thats uncomfortable when you dance. I always see beginners holding their shawls at the corners. Make sure that your holding it halfway down the side and then grab about a quarter in from the end on the top of your shawl.
Make sure that you can always have your arms extended, it is difficult with the weight of your shawl but if you do some arm workouts that will help.

Hope this is of some help to you.

I think it looks better to not see much of hands and arms but I don't think it is a must. The width of the shawl is critical to having it look good when you are gripping it. It should not be too wide or too narrow. The general measurement is from fingertips, across the shoulders to the other fingertips.

I've come to you in a pursuit of knowledge, mainly about shawl dancing and the guide-line to stay as a respectful shawl dancer, instead of disrespected, so that I may know what to look for. I've yet to start learning how to shawl dance and wish to learn all the guide-lines before I work on learning...
