basic step

Hey,
I have been a fancy shawl dancer for nearly a year now and i still dont know the basic step how could i go about learning it?

Heres my perspective and if I'm totally wrong, some one let me know??

OK, when I'm showing some one to fancy I make um watch a male traditional dancer. and then I make them mimic it. When they get good at that double step I tell them to do it more on their toes. I try to get them to alter it a little bit, and then their ready to learn on there own. ..

How was that??
