Does it bother ANYONE that when people make predictions on pws.com on who will win an upcoming jingle dance contests. . . there is a DEFINITE lack of Anishinabe women in these predictions?

Are there any consistant jingle dress contest winners who are Anishinabe?

Is it that the Anishinabe don't care about contests or that they are more interested in the ceremonial aspect of jingle dancing?
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

There's some that I know who are consistant in contest dancing. Karen Pheasant & Becky Taylor have been around for awile. Rolanda White, Madge White, Jackie Klein to name a few. The glitz is not prominent in Anishinaabe Kwe dress. Jackie really jazzes up her outfits. I think that's what catches the judges eye. Jennifer Jones has some eye catching outfits too. She places consistantly also.
It depends where the powwow is located. The Anishinaabe Kwe judges in the heart of jingle dress territory usually go for the not-so-sparkly look. Now, the judges in let's say Red Earth or Schemitzun see things a bit differently than they would in Northern Ontario or Minnesota.

Good question...but I think many of these ladies don't really make it over that way......If they do they don't compete..but thats a good question...hmmmm...I do think more should make it out west and i think the lack ojib's out west is a good reason why there are mainly contemp style winners over there.....

Yeh I think it's a regional thing. I know Jennifer Jones was over in Cali at one of the casino pow-wows last year and tore it up. I wonder how Jackie & Madge would do if they went to Gathering. The winners there seem to be pretty consistent every year, lately.

          Aho Neej!

Goot words. I judge quite a bit and I do go for the old style jingle look (if you will) moreso than the bling look. *L*. But yeah its true that it is a regional thing, kwe_zee. That is why I am all for two categories at powwows ;)

          How you been, Kiwehnzi?

              Good question!

But that makes me think of another one - when was the last Ponca fancy dance champion?
I think everyone on this rez is addicted to Harry Potter...lol...

                SingerD,

                That's easy, George Alexander.

                Woggs,

You make a good point. There are good to excellent Anishinabe dancers. But the majority of them do not travel extensively.

                KweZ,

Jennifer Jones used to be my favorite dancer. Especially when she won that Midnight Special at the Gathering! She used her fan in a real distinct way . . to swing, sway and sasakwe!

Maybe we should have something like affirmative action for us Nishnaabs?

                    LOL just kidding.

But yeah that kind of just feels weird, not bad exactly but odd that we aren't placing at the big powwows in our own dance.

But I agree with Kwe_Zee and Sweetie it is like a regional thing. I've never seen an non-Nish powwow except once at NIEA conference in Oklahoma City.

                          That brings up another question?

Is this an indication that other tribes are adding and changing things that maybe shouldn't be added or changed????

                            Nahh.

All Jinglers are beautiful...contemporary and old style. But I do like the thought of powwows incorporating the two categories. The Old Stylers keepin it real y'know ;)

                              boozhoo,

nishnaabe kwe here, I grew up being traditional dancer, but than made my move into jingle dancing, alot of my friends are jingle dancers too, but we had our "tour" of pow wows that were just traditional ones and that kept us hopping... It was difficult to make a choice weather to go to a competition pow wow or miss out on a weekend with this group of people. I never pow wow'd outside of the great lakes area, until i moved for school...it'll be my first gathering this year! I don't plan to bring my dress's out for competition its juss against all that i know, i'm excited to experience the pow wows out here but am also sad that i won't be with my friends.

all's fair in love and pow wow.... see ya around

Okay, I have heard a lotof talk lately about the change in the way Jingle Dress is changing. Women who were considered "contemporary" a few years ago are now being seen as ol'style in a way. A lot more dancers are, in some opinions, dancing too wild for this style of dance. No longer focusing...

Since eveyone has an opinion or knowledge of jingle dress dancers, here is my question. If Jingle dress dancers are supposed to be about praying and only certain people should be jingle dress dancing, then how do you judge a good jingle dress dancer? Should there even be a jingle dress competition,...
