Do you mean where the right foot twists and the left foot goes up and down or vice versa. I know that my younger sister had an easy time with this style and she'd even switch the right foot left foot movements.

Wery about old style I want to know if their is a difference with old style? I see some dancers that go back and forth and some who raise there hands on honor beats and some who use hands in motion from side to side on honor beats which is correct are they both?

a true old styler will keep their hands on their hips, and every jingle will be moving. if she has a wing fan that fan is to be waved only during a healing song. your only supposed to move your arms if your getting tired and trying to make your jingles move or if you have jingles on your arms. they will keep a fast pace too, passing the slow barley moving ones. they dance the fast pace cause they represent life and life doesnt stand still they go this way and that in a small zig zag pattern, but never turn a full circle...but i already put all this in another forum...
There can only be 2 moccasins on your feet at one time...however life has given me many pair...along with a needle, thread and really sharp teeth to cut with...lmao

            OL Style

I heard from a fren of mine that's from the Mille Lac Tribe that the "correct" way is to move your arms in the same fashion as you would washing clothes on a wash board. she said "back home, the slide or side step is done faster than done anywhere else and if you can't keep up, the elderly ladies make you leave the floor and look at you funny." also that you cant wear the fancy designed dresses like you see everywhere- you have to wear plain dresses or the elderly ladies look at you like they are shunning you. My freind never said nothing about raising a fan or movin your feet in a certain way.. ha , maybe because I never asked her.

well i was taught that you are to put your hands in front of you like on the front of your belt...and not to raise your hand...but i am also told that you put your hands on your hips...but then now i see the women swaying their arms and they call that old style...so i am confused like everyone else....

I saw someone in Denver tryin to side step old style, man she was raising her arms as high as her shoulders were.

I thought it looked goofy, and didnt look right, I mean so high it looked like she was trying to fly away lol.

Sounds more like rabbit dancing than side steppin. I know guys that do this a lot during round dances.

I could be wrong on this one - one thing i know for sure is that Native Flutterby knows what she's talking about - even if she's only part pillager.

Old style. Everybody talks about oldstyle like there's a certain way to dance.

Let me explain oldstyle the way I see it. Not certain ways to step sideways. Not ways to place your hands. Not bending your head sideways at the end. None of that stuff.

Oldstyle is oldstyle. Oldstyle is carrying yourself in a humble way, dressing in a humble way, dancing in a humble way, praying in a humble way.
I'm not a jingle dress dancer by any means, but I appreciate a modest, humble dancer that just makes a person feel better by seeing them dance.

lmao yes i am a pillager band ojib, but thats beside the point, as for the mille laces thing ive never seen them do that at the fall/winter dances or the spring ones either, pull someone off the floor, they may wait for you to get done dancing then take you aside and correct you...and from what i was told by the mindy's over there the wash boarding is for when your tired and cant go one, or when your really feeling the song, you also sa sa qwe (womens war hallar) for the same reason...and the hand raising you only raise it during a healing song (a correct healing is 4 side steps, and you give each of the jingle dress dancers asema) theres more to it but yeah any how, back to the subject at hand, each area of ojibs has a different kind of old style just as we ojibs have different dialects, here at home we have the occasional person who comes from a different ojib rez and tells us how to do it we take it into consideration but then keep doing what were doing, mainly because its worked for the past umpteen generations why mess with a good thing, like the jingle dress, i dance how my mother and grandmother taught me, and my mother learned from her great gramma, so its all who you learn "old style" from is my point. if you didnt learn it from 1 person then theres nothing wrong with it, as long as you know where it originated, Ojibwe country. ok getting off my soap box now....lmao
