  • Traditional Sidestep?

I actually fancy shawl not jingle but I have always wondered what the tradition side step step is. There are so many ways people do it.
A friend who is Ojib once told me the tradition step was done be keeping the feet together and doing a bouncing type move with more knee bend.
There are a lot of people wh do a swivel step with feet to gether, but I see even more who lift left leg and do a step, and many other variations.

Anyone know what the traditional step is?

The leg lifting you are mentioning sonds more like a traditional round dance. I can't recall ever seeing anyone side-step that way...but I spose I haven't seen everything yet either. That's the best I got there.

Now on the side of your side step, when I had prairie chicken dance questions i put a little tobacco down there on the ground and made a lil prayer request for some info...

Maybe try that. Ask the spirit of that dance ot come and show you there. Sometimes a traditional thing like that is just what you need to get your traditional know-how :D

It's also a helluva lot more reliable than the internet ;)

A lot has changed. I’d like to Southern Traditional dance. Do Cherokee’s in general have permission to straight dance, is it individually granted, or is it a dance open to anyone? If allowed, is there anyone that knows about the right type of designs that are used to show my tribal affiliation....

Hi everyone, I'm going to start of by saying that I am a Boy Scout and that I am in the Order of the Arrow. I know that many people on this site do not like the fact that Boy Scouts are doing Native American Dances. I would also like to say that I am respectful and always willing to learn so that I...
