answer to that question is yup it does bother me only those who got no native blood whatsoever because it makes it look as if their mocking us...the only way awhite person can dance is if they've been invited by their in laws and have married a person whos native....youll see at some powwows where white ppl wear something ridiculus...we just sit back and make fun of them..its mean but hay they did something mean first by causing the situation....people who are invited into the circle by their inlaws doesnt really bother me as much though cuz theyre doing it out of respect to their in laws as long as they dont go around claiming their native when they aint...
...truthfully, yes seeing any white person doing any type of dance does. I hold my tongue though now. You need more to the story before opening your mouth and making judgements on people. You never know what might have brought this child or adult to the circle. You never know if they are just a very light skinned native. Find out the "whole" truth, before opening your mouth. I have met a handful of people(including children) with no native blood, that were either adopted tribally or legally by native families that have every right to be there along-side with them dancing.
Thanks guys. When I tell some people that I'm half, they assume that I know everything about powwows and such. The most common question they ask me is can anybody dance. What can I tell them? Yes? No? It's not my place since I don't know enough. But when I do see a non-Native dancing, I look the other way. It's hard not to be biased.
ummmm...depends...i'm not an elder so i really have no say, but in my opinion if the person is true of heart and is not doing it for the zhoon, then yeah...but then again it feels so unright to see them, i think it has alot to do with the old indian in me...(you stole my land you loggers, now you want my dresses too?)
There can only be 2 moccasins on your feet at one time...however life has given me many pair...along with a needle, thread and really sharp teeth to cut with...lmao
lol, i agree with native flutterby. i know a woman who dances and she says she's a quater native, and now her daughter is going to start to dance and they're both as white as the moon......
but anyway, yeah, if urn't native, i don't see why ur dancing. i mean u don't see me doing ukranian dancing....
come to think of it that does sound pretty fun...maybe i'll take up greek dancin...

If you are part native it's fine but no native at all and you're not married to a native then, no it's not okay. I think that if a woman marries a native man she should take up some dance or learn about them, b/c she will soon have children to teach. I also think it is wrong for someone to marry a native then deny that child of their heritage but that's a different subject.

wow....if i ever saw u, i think i might just hurt u. like really i would hurt you. u must REALLY not like round dances or 2 steps because a lot of white ppl with no native in them come it. sad for u now aint it?
lol native_flutterby!!!haha, let me know when u take up greek dancing so we can both learn it!lol,jp
anyways, i also think it is wrong if a white woman marrys a metis man and thinks she can just start dancing just because she married a man with a bit of native in him.
kinda like a native marrying an irish and taking up that river dance stuff...though that kinda dancing would look pretty cool for fancy shawl stuff...lmao

Amen to that. You really never know these days. I've got friends, one parent is full, the other is half, and the baby comes out blonde hair and blue eyed. DNA is a funny thang. But, I think as long as the person is respectful, is dancing for the right reasons, and gets permission its ok to an extent. That's all I'm gonna say
TARHEEL BORN, TARHEEL BRED, WHEN I DIE I'LL BE TARHEEL DEAD!
Hi there, I'm a comp. dancer and travel a lot, visit many PW's and I realized that a lot of those so-called "traditional" PW's are not even hosted by Natives yet they say it's a traditional PW and they "allow" those who are not enrolled (do not have a CDIB Card) to compete anyhow....
I'm not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers by doing this, I just want people's opinion.... What do you guys think about dancers that only go to pow wows to dance what they need to dance.Such as only dancing their contest song and one grand entry and place? There are good dancers out here and most know...
>>>WHO DOES THIS PERSON THINK THEY ARE?
>>>I'm A ***** by Emily
>>>Did you know that native americans in canada have a card that
>>>allows them to
>>>
>>>buy things at a cheaper price. Its called a status card....
What do you think about those who rush into dancing without knowing/participating their community (dances etc..)?
I see so many ppl who were never raised ndn and they go to 1 powwow and all of a sudden they want to dance. Some of them do go through the give away and some of them dont.
