material confusion

i've been wondering, what's the best type of material to bead on. i'm trying to make a fully beaded vest for my new outfit, does anybody have any suggestions?:Chatter

Crib sheeting or canvas... i like both...

yeah, you can get it almost everywhere, both are pretty strong but, the crib sheeting doesn't shift as much as the canvas... u might want to like go with the crib sheeting, then wonder under a piece of canvas under it just to make it do some double duty... i paid like $9.00 a yard for some crib sheeting at joannes....hope this helps... :D :D

like what kind of beadwork are you doing???? applique, or another kind?

umm i'm not too sure on what you would call it, i'm just starting to bead, but i'm guessing flat beading ??i'm just trying to bead straight on a material that would be strong and easy to bead on. there's this felt that's strong it's stiff and easy to bead on anybody know what it's called??

i think that's the crib sheeting... do they sell it in the baby department??

My G'ma beads on felt and she backs it with a brown paper bag... it usually hold up pretty good... she made me a lot of stuff back in the day and it still holds up...

when i firrst started to bead my doh-doh told my grandpa so he made me bead on peice of manilla folder with a easy desighn, and as i got better he would let me bead on felt and then leather and now im pretty good. i guess whatever works best for you.

For my outfit that I just finished I beaded on canvas. It works but it tends to "shrink" the farther along you get on your beadwork. I like beading on the crib sheets but another thing that works good is that pleather stuff. You can buy it at joann fabrics. Its nice because once you draw your pattern its really easy to see.

When you say 'pleather', do you mean vinyl? I usually bead my leggings and mocs on canvas and do my accessories (hair ties, cuffs, barrets, etc) on vinyl. Its easy to bead on, and it holds up pretty good too. What exactly is applique beading? I tack down every third bead, is that what you call it - applique? Hmm....just wondering, I know it as 'not lazy stitch'....lol. Everyone seems to have diff terminology for diff things....jus wondering! :)

Hi! I've found that hands down the stuff that you line your walls with (before you put up wallpaper) if they aren't smooth works the best. I've been making fully beaded yokes/capes for years with this stuff and even after 13+ years of arduous use the yoke is in day 1 condition. It's cheap as heck- stronger than anything (will NOT rip) you can cut it like paper and sew on it like felt but it comes in rolls like wallpaper and draw on it and even use a sewing machine on it too- no straining or special needles too) this stuff looks like felt but is stiff it comes white and you can get single or double thick- it might be called reinforcing. This is a fabric-of sorts. if you would like to see some of the examples of the work I've attached my blue jay cape

Great question... Never used (or heard of)crib sheeting-is this to put under the baby so the matress doesn't get wet?

wow your bluelay is beautiful I have tried using canvas and found it very nerve racking my needles break alot when I use it so I tried felt and brown paper bag thats works good

I bead on lap pad, It's also called crib sheeting. You can find it anywhere it would be with baby stuff.
