Im 17 and designed my first fancy shawl outfit when i was 14,15 ....then this past winter i decided to step it up a notch a make one myself, and am planning on startin another for my oldest sister this weekend... How important do you think it is for todays youth to know how to do this stuff? I love making and designing new outfits because its just another way that allows me to express my creative individuality!! yaya....so tell me wut you think..

I think you hit the wrong forum :(

If we don't learn, then there is nobody to teach our children, or grandchildren.

So it isn't just 'important' for us to learn, it's nessecary. Just make sure that you learn how it USED to be done, as well as how its done today, because without tradition, our methods mean nothing.

I think it is VITAL. It is our youth that must pass down to their children to keep these things alive...and in ANY culture creativity and art are also important. Its better than goin to a shrink if you ask me....(doin art/crafts) and its thereputic to whomever sees it too. Keep on goin girl never stop learning and teaching!

Yes it is important for young people or any age of NDNZ to learn this stuff! I agree that it's also important to learn how to it for now, and how to do things traditionally, which is something which I am working on myself, I made my first outfit when I was 15, I looked at people's outfits as closely as possible and took it from there, I didn't even know how to sew! But I made an outfit and it turned out the way I saw it in my mind and dreams. I'm now 27, so this is a while in coming, (learning to do things traditionally) I used to be too shy to ask people for help, so Please don't be shy! I have found that people are more than happy and even honored to pass their knowledge on to somebody :)

I think it is very important. I wish more girls would learn. But you know it's the Women my age that need to learn too. When I sew for them, I offer to teach them something, but they all just say no, they don't know how. (Duh thats the point of being taught) so they just do all the gofer jobs like ironing, passing pins & cuting threads. The young girls are more likely to try learning something new. One now is really good.
Dancinpowwowbabe, your family should be proud. I always wonder what will happen in a few generations if each community only has one or 2 seamstresses? There will either be some very bad regalia or a few very rich & busy ladies...lol.

I definatly agree. I love to sew and bead and I learn something new everytime I begin a new outfit or beading project. I'm only 21 years old and I started sewing when I was 17/18 and I finally taught myself to bead at 18. I think the youth should be taught so they know these kind of things. :)

It is very important that youth keep on these traditions. Youth nowadays tend to want to watch t.v., listen to the ipods, play games, or whatever, so it's great knowing that youth of today want to learn. It's also important that parents, grandparents, or other elders teach the youth, too.

Soooooooooo.......keep up the good work and pass on your teachings!!!

This might seem stupid, but better to ask a stupid question than to actually do something stupid, hehe.

I never got the chance to meet my grandfather, he passed when my mom was only a little girl, but according to my grandmother he followed the 'traditional' path, and though he respected...

                    Hey yall,

I came up with a really good topic. Something I'm looking at right now. What have been your tougher lessons as a jingle dancer? What are you thankful for? I don't want to have to limit it just to us... but for now it's a start.

I feel like I should apologize for posting an inapropriate image in the 49 forum. It was rather funny and SmokeEater I hope you aren't mad, your my homie I thought you'd get a kick out of it and I hope you saw it before it was censored. I don't regret posting it but an apology is in order nonetheless....
