I am of mixed blood. Not enough blood quantum to claim any tribe but I have Cherokee, Powhatan and who knows what else considering anyone who actually knows is long gone. I wasn't raised in the traditional way but started going to powwows a few years ago and learned my culture and my traditions. I am currently working to become a jingle dress dancer and approached people to learn the proper ways to come into this dance. I don't think the white people who think we are wearing Pocohontas costumes or that think we dance around smacking ourselves in the mouth should be trying to play Indian. However, I think that people who truly want to keep their heritage alive, whether they are full blood, half blood or (as I've heard it said) a Heinz 57 of this that and the other, shouldn't be shunned just because they don't look Indian or aren't tribally enrolled.

non natives dancing
I am a non Native American that does go and enjoy Pow Wow's. I go to the circle to honor the Vetern's. I dance at the Mother's Day Pow Wow. Otherwise I do not go out to dance (yet). I am still learning to respect all the differant styles and reasons for a dance. I am watching and learning.
When I find that I do have the true respect--THEN-- I will start dancing in the circle.

well for the little blood in there system i'm all for it, only because well i have a niece who doesnt look like shes native, she got harassed a couple of times when i took her places...she almost quit dancing because of it...but anyhow if you have native blood in your veins then i'm all for it, if not well then i'd say just intertribal it and leave the rest to us professional natives lol of course i mean this in a good way and i dont mean it in any other way than that...There can only be 2 moccasins on your feet at one time...however life has given me many pair...along with a needle, thread and really sharp teeth to cut with...lmao

by trob226If you are OK with Boy Scouts and hobbyists powwowing, do you think they ought to try to be authentic with their outfits and dancing, or do you think they should try to keep themselves distinct? I don't mean Scouts should dance in their uniforms or hobbs in 3-piece suits (though that would be interesting),...
