  • Raising your hand during the honor beats!

I've been dancing jingle at pow wows for a long time and I can't remember seeing anyone at pow wows use their hand during the honor beat until a few years ago. What are your thoughts on this?

I've seen old style dancers doing this for a while. It's the same as when contemporary dancers raise their fans during honor beats.

as someone who watches jingle dancers, not all raise fans during the honor beats and not all jinglers have fans. a friend of mine who does jingle said she sometimes does, sometimes doesn't. she will will raise her hand when there is someone she knows who needs healing. and also it depends on her mood at the time and the mood of the pow wow.

well from what i know its if youve been through mide'iwin AND if someone has given you tobacco to dance for them for healing...btu that might be just my area...otherwise i was told to keep my hands on my hips or belt.
There can only be 2 moccasins on your feet at one time...however life has given me many pair...along with a needle, thread and really sharp teeth to cut with...lmao

Usually keep my hands on my waist but sometime I wanna use the beautiful eagle tail fan I got from my Mama in her honour.

I was taught that you raise your fan up and wave it during honor beats no matter whether you had received tobacco or not because everytime you dance, you should be praying for someone. I know it differs in some areas though. Just what I was taught.

                Hello
I've been jingle dancing in England for 10 years now, and I was always told to raise my fan to the honour beat.

We have dancers from France, Germany and Belgium, and on watching all other jingle dancers, they all do the same.

I think that it is very honourable and respectful to do this, and have not known any other way.

The way I was taught is similar to what others have already said (about praying for someone/honoring them) but I was also taught that when one raises their hand or fan that you are also honoring the drum for the song.

ok the hand waving is taking the place of the fan. You honor the drum and also respect of the areana and healing.

i stick to my guns on this one, if your going to be dancing in a tribal dress then go by that tribe, i know i wouldnt dance smoke dance and then do my own thing, or put on an apache dress and do my own thing...just saying if your going to dance jingle do what our people go by, with the hand (no fan) if you have gone through the medicine lodge then you have the right to raise the appropriate hand, if not then it stays at the hips.

The dancers of Brule' & AIRO
                        by socman
Every time I've seen Brule' & AIRO (American Indian Rock Opera) live, or on tape (youtube), I've been really impressed with the dancing. Taking traditional dancing and setting it to non-traditional music gives it a new twist, and it brings pow wow type dancing to an audience that might not otherwise...

                        Hip hop at Pow wows?
                        by Cinkala
Unfortuntely I can't bring up the video because my computer is messing up right now. But, there are a couple of videos on youtube that are called "ghetto pow wow". It pretty much is a bunch of dancers dancing to hip hop music in the circle.

What are everybodys thoughts on this?...

Jingle dancers in their 40s 50s... Do they differ in their regalia from the younger generation?

                        I would appreciate your comments.
                        Respectfully,
