  • beading on paper.

My question is if you bead on a piece of paper with the design you want on it is there a chance of little pieces of paper comming up threw your piece? I like the idea of doing it that way cause it would save me a couple of steps from the way i do it. now but not really likeing the thought of the paper working its way up. Any ideas?

I do almost all my work over a paper pattern, but I glue the paper to the fabric I'm working on. I've never had paper come through. Not to worry!

what kind of glue do you use?

I like the paper idea what kind of glue do you use and do you draw on paper with your own design or do you find one in a book and bead that? or get one from the net print it off? alot of questions I know but what i do now is put my design on pelon staple that to felt then i bead. And is the glue hard to bead threw? Im wondering all of this because im going to be starting a rather big bead project for a friend of mine useing flowers and im hoping to find the design she wants on paper and bead it to save me some steps and if beading on paper gets me the same result my way gets im there!!! thanks!

sometimes I draw and color my patterns by hand, but usually I draw/color my patterns on my computer and print them...I just use that "Paint" program that comes on most computers!

I use Alleen's tacky glue...I smear a thin layer with the bottle tip or with my finger...it dries flexible so it's not tough to bead through! If it's a big piece I'll lay a heavy book on top til it dries, otherwise the paper may warp or crinkle.

I was taught never to bead on paper. Beadwork should be made to withstand getting wet and should be made to last forever. To each his own though!

              what if

I have yet to bead on paper but why couldnt a person bead on paper if that is what they prefer or know how to do, what if bead on paper then put a piece of plastic canvas, cardboard, butterlid.in the middle of the piece then back it in leather. so yes the paper is ther but also so is the other things that would make it stable? when I bead like for barrettes, hairties, beltbuckles, earings, braclets oh jeeze i could go on and on with that but back to the point I bead on pelon stapled to felt when my piece is done i carefully trim out so not to clip my beads put in one of the items said then back it it leather. that should be strong for paper designs as well seeing that the paper has to be somehow attached to tofelt or whatever but we all have our own ways that is what makes things interesting learning and shareing thanks me.

I certainly hope you don't think that the only thing holding your stitches/beads is paper! As I stated, the paper pattern goes on top of whatever you are beading...fabric, felt, buckskin, etc., then you stitch through both layers (then I back my work with buckskin and edge bead it for a nice finished look). I am an accomplished beadworker of traditional and contemporary outfits...my work has certainly withstood many rainstorms and other powwow abuse!! LOL I guarantee my beadwork will outlive me! Yikes, what a thought.

I don't see anything wrong with using modern techniques to produce desireable work that people will wear (and pass down the generations) proudly!

If you don't like the idea of little pieces of paper, try Pellon's stitch and tear... you can bead over it and tear the remainder away from the edges. I've used this for beading on velvet for tiny intricate designs. Works pretty good if I do say so myself.

Ahhhhh tacky glue! One of those things in life that you just would love to kiss the inventor for making life wonderful! LOL

First of all, I think the term "paper" is a little misleading and inaccurate for most people who use this. The people I know (including myself) actually use a thin cardboard, like file folders or cereal boxes. For every person that does this type of beading, there are five people who think it is going to turn to much when it gets wet. I have been a fancy dancer for several years and have sweat through my entire outfit. All of my medalions done on PAPER are as good as new. I can provide witnesses to the fact. There is nothing wrong with not using paper either though.

I coat it with clear fingernail polish when I'm done. Back it with felt or leather (prefered) and sometimes put a thin piece of cardboard or plastic inbetween for stiffness.

Oh and to answer your original question, the paper doesn't come through.

Don't be beading thru duct tape!!!

That said, I've beaded thru paper all my life. No glue, glue (Elmer's and Aleene's), brown paper or bonded on the back, notebook paper on the front.

If you need to tear the paper off around the sides later, it's easy and tweezers help to get the itty bitty pieces. In fact, paper helps the buckskin stay clean like when I bead roses on the toes of mocs. I cover the whole top with paper, then tear it off later.

And how else can you get a nice crisp applique design if you don't have it drawn on paper??????
                            ...it is what it is...

                              I like

I like to bead on Pelon I draw what ever design I want wether it be a traced design or a free handed design ,then staple it to felt normaly white felt and when im done trim it out put my stiffiner in the middle back it with leather I know I have wrote that before but I thought id share it again .The only thing that I have found that i dont like about useing pelon is it does not erase very well it makes fuzzies and black marks so im real careful to draw it the way i want it the first time or make due with what i have. In that respect paper would be good cause it would erase alot better and cleaner. Just a thought.

I've decided to try to bead a pair of moccasins for my new outfit. I've never done a pair before. I asked a couple of friends who bead them for some advice, but we really didn't get a lot of time to talk about it. They suggested beading on a piece of canvas first, then sewing that onto leather of...
