  • Custom Beadwork?

Okay...I am building a set of Straight Dance Regalia...and I HATE doing beadwork.

Where are some reliable sites/reliable people where a person could order custom beaded loom strips or preconstructed items?

Guess I should have given more info...

Okay, guess I should have given more info.

First, I am not a hobbiest, I am not a boyscout, or in a Venture Crew or any of those things. I am In'din and I have been PowWow dancing since I was 6 and have been involved in making my own regalia since I was 12. I know how to Gourd stitch, Loom, Lazy Stitch, and I can make Rosettes...What I said was "I HATE doing beadwork". I guess I have a little ADD but I have a closet full of half finished beaded items...just cant ever seem to finish.

I guess the assumption is that an In'din would have family to help with beadwork...which would normally be true but I'm tired of asking them for help...even if I paid somebody else for the work...at least I would have taken care of it on my own. Get it?

NEWays, I will not be dancing with a Tail Stick until Im given one...I have a mirror board. I will be wearing an older looking style of regalia with Calico Shirt instead of Satin, Painted buckskin leggings, and a short breast plate with Pectoral or gorget, partially beaded Mocs instead of fully beaded, and Im thinking about Mescal beans and silver fluted beads for the bandoliers.

But at any rate I was more asking if there is anyone that any of you have done business with in the past that does good work and is reliable to get the job done (because I am not!)

If you go to Pauls' trader site there are some people there who you could possibly contact for beadwork. Just be more specific as to what type of beadwork you are looking for and I am sure the prices they quote will give you an idea of their cost. Ask for photos of their work so you can have an idea as to quality. Also look at the site on here that gives some great information and photos of Straight Dancers and their dance outfits. If you need more information and think I can help, PM me on the side.

Are there any examples of Blackbears work we can see on site of ribbon work? I am also interested in a possible set.

Don't even think of asking me. I'm booked for the next couple of years, and someday I will make something for myself. I know a lot of people in Indian country, but I can't think of anyone else that specializes in straight dance belts/loom beadwork for sale.

I can vouch for a couple people on here for different work they do. Blackbear is one of them another is powwowbum49. Although I haven't dealt with her personally (yet.. ) I know people that have dealt with walela49 and have been pleased. I know I haven't mentioned everyone that does fine quality work and are honest because I know I would leave some names out, so I would suggest to ask around.

I also can tell you there are more people on here that should not even be thought about for having work done. Some have half azzed stuff then when they are supposed to rectify the situation never do. There have also been some to get money up front and never come through with the goods. Sad to say it makes no difference when it comes to cheaters..... they can be native as well as non native. Same goes for people wanting work done for them...... they find a good trusting soul that will do it and then they don't pay for the work done.

For anyone.......... make sure you protect yourself in a deal like this whether you are the one requesting work to be done or the one doing it.

I can have ribbonwork done in a heartbeat, but folks don't be asking me for beadwork for awhile.. I'm still trying to finish up another guy's apron here and I'm so friggin swamped with things other than beadwork or any crafts right now it's not even funny. I had to take today just to get some rest to get over this sinus stuff.

In case it matters.. I'm Tuscarora and half white, not plains indian but i have an osage hubby that I've done lots of ribbonwork for not to mention shawls and a few contemporary items. I don't do cut and fold, applique style only.

Love your Dragons and Bears. You have some nice work out there and you seem to stay VERY busy. It doesn't matter what your background is when looking at good work. And your reputation or your craftsmanship is also honorable from all the posts I am reading. That also counts a great deal. I have been off this board for some years now do to problems others created. Nice to see a good person on here who can write eloquently and a craftsman as well.

I can vouch for powwowbum49, walela49, and blackbear. The bum makes some really nice good quality fairly priced stuff and his sense of humor is killer. Walela (one creative native!) moves faster than exlax! lolol Blackbear's stuff is nice, she makes sure you get what you want. I'm sure there are other great crafters but I don't know what their business is like. Wyorose cranks out some of the most beautiful stuff as does Kiowakat. Those are just two that come to mind...

Some people don't have any kind of ethics when it comes to cheating people out of money so you need to be careful.

Seriously though folks.. if you are looking for custom work to be done or offering your services... please post it in the trading post. This area is for discussing beadwork and how to, not the who. Thanks! :D
