To Czech or Miyuki? LOL

I bought a bunch of Miyuki for bead weaving earring once, but I gave them all away.

Like WD, my favs are size 11 cut Czechs. Followed by size 9 tri-cuts in a distant third...actually they're great for applique and SUCK for lazy stitch.

Do you mean pics of the dress? AWWW, phooey, that was ages ago. Nope, don't have the pics, sorry....but I am sure DIL has plenty of the event. It was a wonderful wedding, and she has been a a peach of a DIL.

You know what I like...? Those Czech 8s that are crystal clear with a silver lining. They look like melting clear ice on a hot day. Make me thirsty just looking at them. I used them to do some beading on DILs wedding dress that had them on the lace applique designs; she wanted a bolero jacket and I matched the flowers and beads from the dress onto the jacket I sewed for her.

Loved the look....I need to use it for a powwow project.

The Miyuki beads are more square shaped than the rounder Czech beads. That will affect the look of your finished product. As stated above, the Miyukis have larger and thinner holes so they are not as durable as other kinds of beads. Because of that, I would not use them for mocs due to the wear these will get.

My bead stash is made up of mostly Czech beads and most of my work is done with those, for every beading technique. However, I do like to use the smaller size 15 Japanese beads. Don't have much of the Miyuki 11/o. My stash also has some French and Italian beads. Man, the old Italian beads are soooooo uneven and crooked but the colors are not found in more modern beads.

Getting bead sample charts is a good idea especially with the Japanese beads since there are a gazillion colors and finishes available.

When I was younger, I used to bead all in French beads. But now I am liking the Czech beads. I get more colors and the ones I've been getting have been very even.

I have to say that I'm not fond of the Japanese beads. They are too uniform. I suppose they would be really good for peyote. I have some but I don't even take them out of my stash. I think they have been in there a very long time.

So I'm trying to figure out some colors for some beadwork and been reading some of the other threads...and I got to thinking...

Do different type beads serve different purposes?

Seems like Czech beads would work well for applique or 2-thread beading.

And it seems Miyukis (with bigger holes) would work well on moccassins due to the movement of da feet. Kind of like more bead movement allowance when you're doing a bad arse step. LOL

My eyeballs do not like the bead colors on websites. I'll prolly send off for bead charts.

I prefer czech in 11s....cause I can't see them itty bitties !!! LOL And I can get them in cuts ! Those miyukis are slightly different shape !

My mother beads a lot more with Czechs, but I tend to use miyukis a lot more. It really does depend on the project and what look you're going for on the project though. I use a lot of delicas in sizes 15 and 11 for most projects due to the uniformity, feel, and hole size.

Not sure that anyone else feels this way but I also like the way they feel when stringing and weaving them. My mum and I mainly do a lot of bead weaving using fireline (and sinew on some projects) and after a very long period of use or a lot of weaving through multiple beads, mum's czech beads, crystals, etc. will often wear away the wire/stringing material a bit quicker than when either of us work with miyukis.

Maybe it's just us, but our line seems to wear and snap sooner when working with certain types of beads rather others (of course, tension also comes into play here, but I've had a lot more trouble with snapping rows of czechs than rows of miyukis).

On some occasions, I'll actually do two of the same designs but with different types of beads. Same exact weave, but they'll look completely different because of the types of beads used. So I think it just depends on what project you're doing and what look you're going for.

Ive never used Miyukis, so I have nothing to offer in that dept but I like to use mostly 3 cuts due to I like shiney lol, My main set is in those. Most of my neclaces and earrings are sizes 13 & 14 cuts. With that being said ive not really helpd you lol but I will say hello :)
