  • Macaw Fans????

I have been seeing a lot of fans recently made out of macaw feathers. Although they are beautiful and the feathers are readily available.....Is it proper to use these feathers when making regalia? What is everyones opion on this?

        macaw fans!

Some tribes-nations can't carry a macaw fan, especially women.

I think macaw fans are beautiful. I love the colors. I just noticed I've been seeing alot of them lately. Not at any Powwows yet, but I'm up north so maybe that's why. I dance tradish and my wife dances cloth. I was just curious as to what everyones opinion is on these colorful fans.

I have built over 400 macaw fans in the last 30 years and they are very proper to use in the dance arena. All one needs to do is hang out around museums in Oklahoma to find that macaw feathers have been used historically and are a common occurance in and around the dance arena.

I travel a lot. My beadwork classes that just finished were in Texas. I kind of travel where ever there is a good dance.

We leave Thursday a.m. I'm supposed to be picking the "boy from up north" up at the airport. I hope he's got some of those photos with him. I'd love to take a look at them again.

The first fan I'm making is a turkey wing fan. Is there a better way to make the handle than to buy that block of wood from crazy crow?? And how does everyone attach the handle to their wing??...

                              Hi all,

I am interested in making a fan to go with my outfit. I was wondering about the general way that you go about doing it - what you use for a handle, if you bead first then put the feathers into the handle (i've seen some wooden handles where you can do that), etc.

                              ...

I'm needing a few suggestions. I am working on a flat fan for my step dad (Cheyenne/Arapaho). I have only collected 4 eagle tail feathers.

Is it ever okay to make a flat fan with an even number of feathers?

Can you use other feathers in addition to the eagle...

I have a few questions. I dance jingle and I'm wondering, if you don't have enough eagle feathers to make a fan, would the fan I have would work? I attached a picture of it. The feathers are blue maccaw and american parrot. It is a beautiful fan and it was a gift to me. I live in a white society, so...
