This was my latest finished bow for my friend. I am terrible about taking picks of my best work, so I asked my friend to take some with his phone n send em. Usually I break old tradition and decorate the face 'back' of the bow. This one is red oak with a hickory backing and after I shined it up it was too pretty to decorate. Two pheasant tail feathers hang from the handle.

So , What kind of draw weight do they have ?^ I've been watching the "backyard bowyer" on youtube. He does some cool stuff with pvc !

The one with my friend in the pic is 60 pounds at 25 inches... I like mine heavy just for laughs. He had never drawn a bow before until he was at my house so I told him to try mine. I was surprised how far he was able to pull my 80 pounder, though it was probably 70 at his length, so I left his at 60 pounds. I like to make bows with no backing, known as 'self' bows. It takes more skill, and that's how they were made back in the day. It's not really viable for a sixty pounder with red oak from home depot though lol.

My sons is 30, with a lower notch to make it 35 at his length. 35 will take out a turkey, even a young boar if you hit it perfect with a sharp arrow.

You would have to be crazy to hunt wild pigs with a 35 pounder though lol.

I have heard about those PVC bows, but I haven't looked at em yet. Youtube is where I learned the style of the 80 pounder.

Nah, wasn't me. I could though, horse hair n all. It is a pretty keen bow of interest in my opinion too because its only 47 inches long but still shoots at 40 pounds at a 22 inch draw...super short draw.

I know 50 pounds will go through a moose, I'm still to chicken to hunt by myself with less than 50 pounds though, but as we can see, it was done.

I'm really not happy with the picks of my own war bow, camera on my phone doesn't do it justice, and it's impossible to get a good pic of the whole thing without flash.

LOL You don't need that strong a bow if you ride your horse right up next to your prey ! I've seen horse bows that were even shorter.....38-40 inch ! Sinew backed and rawhide wrapped. Still a 45-60 pound range.My brother built one that's about 40" and about a 45 pound at 21" tough little bow. I can shoot them , but I don't build them ! LOL

Man, I almost feel ashamed there is pretty much NOTHING traditional about those bows I posted, and here you are shooting bows your brother made from a horse! He probably made em Old style too! I better just retreat and go back to the city! LOL
At least there I know my butt from a hole in the ground! lol

Osage orange , though around here we call it hedge. Very hard wood.

Expensive for California kids like me. I was thinkin on gettin some, none grows out here, looked on line at the price n changed my mind.

Osage makes the best tradish bows in my opinion.
