  • Eagle feathers and such

Not sure if this would be the right place to post this or not but I can't think of where else to put it. One of my friends was given a feather that he was told was eagle. However it is black with a white tip instead of white with black tip. Has anyone ever heard of an eagle that would have feathers like that?

My second question is are there any other birds that have white feathers with black tips like an eagle? I ran across some white with black tip feathers for sale somewhere and there are some other feathers in the mix that look very similar to hawk feathers. They aren't painted or anything. Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like you are describing Hornbill feathers to me. There are several types. There are some that are kept as pets here in the states. In the wild they come from Africa and Asia. If I'm not mistaken they are part of the Toucan family.

I have seen a few people breeding hybrid turkeys, with feathers that have similar colors and markings as eagles and one that looks similar to redtail feathers.
The things you are doing today are the traditions of twenty-five years from now.

For anyone who may be able to help me out, here is the link to the feathers. I didn't buy them, a friend of mine did but I don't know what any of them are except the goose feathers and the macaw feathers.

Some of the brown ones look like buzzard feathers to me.

        Well, they do. lol

Why must I feel like that..why must I chase the cat?

I kind of thought that too, but I wasn't sure since I've never really looked at buzzard feathers. They said the whole lot was purchased at an estate auction from a Native American family so I wasn't sure what could be in there. I know it's a big no no to buy or sell eagle feathers but since I can't legally own eagle feathers, I've never looked at them too much.

The black and white feathers in the ebay auction are white turkey wing feahters dyed black at the tip, a dime a dozen at any local craft store.

Some pigeon feathers look just like mini eagle feathers, but probably too small for what you want.

The brown ones are Canada Goose and the white ones with the black tip are seagull wing feathers, those can be picked up in any MacDonalds parking lot!
Only reason I recognize the white ones is that very fact, I have picked up over 30 of them on the highway and they have those exact markings.

There is a real good explanation for Eagle feathers from the US department in a pdf file that shows the difference between Eagle, Goose, vulture and other birds. It goes into detail for the shape and colour of the quill and other differences between waterfowl as well. Sorry I do not remember the site.

I agree, the black with white tip sounds like hornbill to me too.

There are some feathers from black-shouldered peacocks which look a lot like B+W eagle feathers. They are hard to get and expensive. A pic of one is on this link if you scroll abour three-quarters of the way down....

If I remember right, these have a bit of purplish iridescence at the top of the feather.

This site sells nice eagle imitations....

I've seen an eagle tail feather like this before. I was told it was a norwegion sea eagle feather. The one's I saw were pretty cool looking and very unique.

I might be wrong about this, so someone please correct me if I am wrong but I do think that magpie feathers are like that, but they are rather small, nowhere the size of eagle feathers. You see them used in a headdress called a "mop top". I don't know what that piece is supposed to be called, but I have heard it called that.

I think the feather your friend recieved is perhaps from a Stellar's Sea Eagle. They live up in northern Alaska and Siberia. And are black with white tips. Hornbills have this as well. Magpies too, but they are small. I've seen a few down here in the Southern plains. And I would have to agree with the Canada goose assesment on the other feathers as well.

                            Peacock Feathers

I was just about to post that all those other feathers look like peacock/peahen feathers. My GGAuntie and her husband used to have a farm with peacocks and I spent HOURS gathering feathers there... they had white and blue peacocks as well as oriental ducks, black and white swans, pheasants, chickens of all kinds.... wish they were still alive today or that I still had half the feathers I collected as a kid!

Ive never seen a magpie with white tips on its feathers, and magpies used to eat me dog's food, so i seen one or two before, i traded a guy for a feather he told me was eagle, but its a white tail black cockatoo kinda cool if u ever see one, come in yellowtail and redtail flavors too. thankz for the awesome legaleagle link czechy, those are far out.

Has anyone heard of sable brown peacock feathers that come from the underbelly of a peacock and if so where can you buy them. A friend of mine on the rez has one made from these feathers for her little girl. To my amazement they looked like our eagle feathers with just a little difference. Any help...
