  • Eagle Feather Repository Question and 20 Miscellaneous Feathers

    Hello all,
Firstly I would like to give a brief introduction if myself. I am probably not the typical kind of person you see around these parts. I am hardly Native (CDIB says 1/128th) and the rest is European. I had previously educated myself on the minute Native heritage I had out of curiosity but later in life came to find out more about my Native European traditions and beliefs, which is what I now practice. I follow the old ways of the Germanic Europeans so I certainly am a stranger around these parts to say the least.
That being said I detest the New Agers and internet tiktok Vikings, and I am strictly an Old Ways kind of guy. I study the sources, the historical accounts, archeological findings, and I use a form of reconstructionism called The Epic Method, which originated with Viktor Rydberg, who refuted the academic methods of interpreting our lore, which seems to be of heavily flawed methods.
As I've gone on studying the sources I have found that my people had much respect for eagles and they are heavily tied into our Native European Religions, even being associated with various Gods as well as our cosmology. I have decided to incorporate their usage into my practice and have come up with some methods that have some level of genuine bearing in a religious sense, which I hope is not New Age.
That being said, I am still a registered member of a federally recognized tribe and was looking into acquiring some eagle feathers from the National Feather Repository. I have been studying the process and it appears that there are some long waiting periods to say the least. I only really need one secondary or tail feather as I plan on doing a burning of sacred herbs (listed in Old Norse and Saxon sources) much like how one might smudge with sage. Golden Eagles seem to be the most authentic and likely species that is referred to in our lore and traditions. I was looking into the 20 Miscellaneous Feather selection and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this selection of feathers and just how "low" of quality they might be. Are we talking terribly tattered feathers with broken quils or are they something that may still be ideal for the usage I mentioned? Obviously I am not seeking to make any sort of powwow regalia here or anything of that nature.
That being said, I hope folks reading this can understand where I am coming from and see that I have the utmost respect for the Old Ways of your peoples as much as I do mine. I am simply seeking to drink from my own well and practice the ways of my own people.
Thank you for your time folks.

The 20 misc. feathers will be mostly wing spikes. Some will be beat up , but all are usable. You might have to steam them or iron some to preen them out so they look good , but they are always good feathers. Goldens will take the longest to get , with immatures the very longest. Balds are the easiest. Hope this helps.
I believe blood quantums are the governments way to breed us out of existance !

They say blood is thicker than water ! Now maple syrup is thicker than blood , so are pancakes more important than family ?

There are "Elders" and there are "Olders". Being the second one doesn't make the first one true !

Somebody is out there somewhere, thinking of you and the impact you made in their life.
    It's not me....I think you're an idiot !

Thank you very much good sir. This is helpful information.
Given that most will be spikes/primaries, do they generally include a couple of secondaries or tail feathers too?

Keeping the “Sacred” in Sacred Traditions

Eagles and eagle feathers have been a hot topic in the news across the continent lately. Sadly, the news has been as much bad as good. While eagle populations are slowly recovering, not all is going well for this majestic bird.

          Feather BUSTS!
          by rocks_az
FYI - last time the U.S government forced this on our Indian relatives in the south, it had an impact on Canadian First Nat ions on this side of the boarder. A matter worth looking into. JD

Is there honor in eagle feathers???
          by Mato Winyan
The first thought that comes to mind for many when they see an eagle is "Man.... look at those feathers!"

I remember years ago people would just stand in awe whenever they saw an eagle. I also remember when they put the eagle on the endangered species list because of the pesticide...
