  • Shawls

I want to make a shawl for intertribals and such. I can do some basic sewing and needlework but havent completed much. I think this would be a good project for me. Before I venture into the brave world of beading :)

Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on length. Ive seen ones that the fabric goes down to the waist, the hips or the knees. I think I prefer a long look. How much should the fringe be spaced? And are there any "rules" (or even tips!) for decoration?

    Thanks for your help!

i have a few picture of the shawls ive made, i will post them 2morrow

well . . . i use the 18" fringe for my shawls and buy 2 yrd of fabric.
i like to space the fringes 'thumb width apart' . . so i buy 2 yrds of the fringe and that goes all the way around.

as far as decorations . . . im still learning to do that. the ladies ive spoken to tell me to use iron-on appliques i havent tried that yet. LoL!!

    hope this helps . . .

thats what u get 4 breaking my heart...

thanks Mud_Woman :) Look forward to seeing your pics!

You also reminded me of another question. Is it better to have the fringe on 3 or 4 sides? Ive seen both but have no idea how they compare to wear.

i kinda would like to applique some of my needlework, the project im working on now seems appropriate. But ive been worried the result wont be flat enough or have good flow. Especially since Ive never done it before. I dont want to mess it up! lol.

I was always told to measure your arms width. I usually measure from one fingertip on the left hand to one finger tip on the right hand. I like to make 18" for adults and 14" for teens.

I have used Iron on Appliques but I like ribbonwork as well.

I am just starting the regalia-building process for my daughters. They are interested in fancy dancing. I know it will take me some time to sew everything, but there is an upcoming powwow (March 3-4) here and I was hoping to at least have shawls made for them to wear during the intertribals. I've...

                      And what about the fringes??
Could you help me on this one??
Please, any input would be appreciated!

Being out here in non-Pow Wow land, I have managed to make it into adulthood without having attended a Pow Wow. Recently I went to OK and was able to attend a Pow Wow while there (Choctaw). I was told I need to at least get a shawl for entering the circle during open dances. We are going back in a few...
