  • Yarn Roach base Question

I've started my first Roach and have a question on braiding the Base.
Noc bay, Video said to use 12 strands 4 in each row.
In a post from powwowbum49 I think he said 6 strand,
2 in each row then braid.
I would like to get some feed back on how many strand to use on a base.
And can someone post a picture of a base so,
I can see if I'm folding it right.
    Thanks,
    DRU

What they said is correct. I was trying to explain how to cut the yarn and said that you need to cut 6, 12 ft. strips of your yarn and then tie a a small piece yarn in the middle of that length to make 12 strips 6 ft. long. At this point you then braid that just as you would your own braids.

Just make sure to do everything tight. Acrylic yarn will naturally stretch so make sure it is tight to start with. Besides it aint no fun trying to sew up your rows of hair to a loose base.

      Hey Powwowbum49,
Can you post a picture of one of your Bases?
How long Of a roach will 6ft of yarn make?
Who is a good source for porcupine guard hair that wont be a arm and a leg?

And do you know any one that makes beaded moccasins for people. That's one thing I just don't have time to make myself.
      Thanks,

I will see if I can take a pic of a base and 6 ft will make up to a 22" base depending on how wide you make the crown.

Where I buy my hair from would do you know good cause you aint going to be buying a pound at a time, but just few ounces. I would suggest buying 3 ounces if you are making an 18 or longer, and 2 ounces for one shorter than that. Retail price on guard hair is basically the same every where, so finding it cheap you just might get what you pay for. Just call Crazy Crow or Noc bay or a place like that.

As for mocs...that would depend on what style moc you are wanting.

I thought you twisted it around like when you make rope . great now I gotta start all over again .

oh PWB. I wanted to tell you .. i' think I might have obbsesive compulsive roach making disorder . I made a fiber foach in 5 hour . and I've only made 3 of them and that was my third . I think I 'm going to add another row though. I kinda treated it like a porcupine at least how the directions said to do it . no deer hair though.

All right, :Mad To make the base more pointed on the end.
Do you make the second strand a little shorter?

Well, I make my bases with a flat end that is the same width as the rest of the length of the tail...mine do not taper at the end and the instructions in that noc bay video will make a base just like mine. (from what I have been told that is...I have never even watched that video). If you are wanting the tail to taper then you will need to 'whip' the braided strips at whatever length you need to get the shape you want and then cut them to that length just past the whipped area and flush to the whipping. (I just suggest braiding the 6 ft length of yarn because it will be more than you need and longer than you need is better than coming up short)

As for the mocs....are you wanting them custom made to match other beadwork or just any ole pair that fits and are the right colors?

                MD

You can twist the yarn into rope and use it that way, nothing wrong with it. I just prefer the yarn briaded because it give you a wide flat side that is easy to sew to.

Now keep in mind that being fast is good as long as quality doesn't change. The biggest thing to make sure you do when making a roach is to make sure the hair is tied TIGHT. Loose bundle will pull out and cause the roach to wear out faster than it should. A properly made and cared for roach will last nearly your whole life and sometimes longer. I have a roach here to repair that was made 47 years ago, and the only thing wrong with it is the base is giving out. The porky and deer hair are just fine.

well I did it over 2 days , the roach is actually yery tight and seems to be fine in how it's tied , just the fiber I used is thin so I think it needs another row of hair.

I finished my first Roach Base. Think the crown is not wide enough. How wide should the crown be?
I made the end tapper. I put a picture in the Gallery.
I did'nt know how to post a attachment to it.

Powwowbun49, thank you again for your help.

So, I will have a pair made with my Colors and design. Enless someone has a pair I like.
If you have anyone that can make me a pair let me know?

About the mocs....Try calling Izzy Umshied of Two Pony Trading post and ask him what he has in stock here is the phone # 316-686-8147

I have seen crowns in widths from 2" up to 5". Mine are usually between 2 3/4" to 3 1/2". The biggest thing about the width of the crown is that you need a roach stick that is close to the same size as the crown unless you really want your roach to open wide and lay nearly flat.

I don't know how old this post is, but I make moccasins. I have been making them for over 20 years & use only brain or smoke tanned moose with a double sole, the outside being hard belt leather anywhere from 1/2 - 1" thick, depending on your needs. My personal mocs have lasted me over 14 years of heavy dancing before I had to change the soles.

Hey y'all. This is a good thread about making roach bases, although I'm still waiting on pics.

But DON'T be advertising for wanting to buy or wanting to sell anything. That's what the Trading Post is for.

                            Hi Again,

I am making a hair roach from a kit that I got from Crazy Crow. The instructions which came with the kit are very vague in a couple of places. The procedure for pinning and sewing the hair cord to the base is my problem. I asked Crazy Crow to clairify and all I got from them...

Hi. We have tied some horsehair (kinda like a little roach) and now we need to attach it to a rosette. This will go on a headband. Any suggestions??? Thanks for your help.
