  • Feather Bustle

New thread...I now have just over 2 dozen hawk feathers. Approximately how many eathers would it take to make a rather "full", u-shaped traditional dance bustle? Has anyone ever made one with hawk feathers? They're quite smaller than the goose feathers of my present bustle.

    Huya,
    Jim

hmmmm, i think that you would probably need at least twice that many to make it real full. i have a friend making my son one and that is from 2 sets of hawk wings but it will be a double. i guess it depends on how large you want the bustle to be and how big you are. that would only be about 12 feathers to a side.

With wide feathers, you need 15+ per side. Hawks are pretty slim, so I would go almost double that. The length of the extensions also plays a huge role in the overall look. Hawks will definately need extensions . . .

Whatever you do, please don't put loooooong extentions on them if you don't have a lot of feathers. I really hate those "tinker-toy" bustles I see from time to time.

I've built several hawk bustles. I wouldn't extend over 6" unless you're putting in a second layer. I used about 26 wing feathers , per side , for an adult size bustle. It measures about 30" across.
I was lucky , I found several very large hawks and kinda sorted and picked the biggest feathers. Don't be impatient , if it's meant to be , they will come to you. Later
I believe blood quantums are the governments way to breed us out of existance !

They say blood is thicker than water ! Now maple syrup is thicker than blood , so are pancakes more important than family ?

There are "Elders" and there are "Olders". Being the second one doesn't make the first one true !

Somebody is out there somewhere, thinking of you and the impact you made in their life.
        It's not me....I think you're an idiot !

There's a chance you might not like me ,

        but there's a bigger

        chance I won't care

I'm looking for help to make a bustle. One of the things I can't figure is how to do the star when you wrap the dowel rods or whatever use use to extend the feathers. I also wanted to know if it would be considered improper to use my husband's firefighter patch in the center instead of a beaded medallion....

I am in the process of getting all the supplies needed to make a bustle. I have been using the Evans' book, but i've seen bustles with extenders, sinew and beads connecting the feathers, etc. Anybody has ideas on how to improve upon the Evans' book?

          Bustles
          by sunbursthonor
          hey guys,
I am beginning to draw up designs for my bustle. What do u think about a double-row bustle. The outer row consisting of turkey wing feathers and the inner row consisting of turkey tail feathers? All comments are greatly appreciated.
