  • Tipi competitions...are there any???

Where are there any tipi competitions...anymore?
There use to be many back in the 1970 to late 1980s....but do not seem to see much around now.

      Tipis

yes we have divisions....we have some youngsters who like to build thier own mini models of the big tipis...therefore we created them a division of thier own.....It looks real cool to have the smaller versions mixed in with the full size Tipis...It also encourages and trains our youngsters in the art....

          Tipis

We have a group of judges chosen from the group attending our event....And in the past have had a ballot system....
Adults pay $25 entry fee....And can earn a $100 dollar prize for best tipi.....I haven't been on the judging group myself so I just have a glimmering of what's judged....But rest assured these rules are similar to the ones put in place at other competitions.....

The junior division was implemented becase of the youngsters in our tribe and the local scouting groups wanting to get in on the competition....We simply wanted to encourage our youngsters to work on an art that seems to be diminishing.. It's always great to see how these young ones come up with ways to build these smaller versions of the tipis....

Yes, we have a flier and press release for this event...you can email me privately...I don't know how to attach in this forum....this is the first time I've been on a chat list....I usually avoid them....

What other competitions does your group base their judging on?
I am courious because I find this very interesting.
It adds to the knowledge I have on modern tipi camping.

Well, then I am still looking for places that have tipi competition. And it looks like with the price of gas, that fewer tipis will be going to events.

                      Tipis,

I went to one in Germany awhile back. It was sponsored by an Indian enthusiast group that set up a 3-day tipi encampment.

There is also a yearly tipi contest at McMurray College in Texas. My dad judges that one.
Powwows will continue to evolve in many directions. It is inevitable.

                          This is second hand info:

Each tipi is tribal specific. He looks at the construction of the tipi to see that the construction fits the tribe. Some of the things he said he looks for are:

                          1. The starting poles - three or 4 pole?
                          2. The layering of poles - Comanche, Crow and Lakota are distinct on the placement of the poles.
                          3. Placement of the fireplace.
                          4. The canvas construction - perfectly round or long in the back. Why?
                          5. Tipi flaps - Shape and size. Do they match with the tribe and size of the tipi.

These are some of the general topics he covers. Again this is all from memory.

The McMurray College (Abilene, Texas) tipi competition coincides with their homecoming. It has been a long standing tradition at their college.

                                Any Parade Organizers out there?
                                by wyo_rose
HELP! I've just been volunteered to help organize the parade through Jackson Hole for the Shoshone Reunion in July.

There were mentions of insurance, permits, etc... And how does one exactly organize a parade??

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

what are some of the ways that you deal with your anger and the person you're angry at? i've tried the deep breathing, listening to soft music, taking a walk, sleeping in the other room, thinking about worst things that i could be mad about but it doesn't help me.

Here we go again. . .

What is our interest there? There are lots of other countries with social unrest. Why do we always get involved with the Middle East?

                                Should we even be there?
