FIRST NATIVE IN SPACE - JOHN HERRINGTON

For those of you in Florida, there is going to be a celebration to honor astronaut John Herrington, enrolled Chickisaw {sp} (i originally put Choctaw, but he's chickisaw- think my brain was fried haha!).

He is going up in the space shuttle next week, not sure of launch date - think on Sunday or Monday!

But there will be singing, dancing, prayers, talking, etc. before, during, and after (i think?!) he lifts off into space!

If you know anyone in the Indian group at NASA-KSC, might give them a call and get all the details- or one of the local Indian clubs there...

It's a night launch, always a spectacular sight!

Last I heard, when he goes up, he is taking some little knick-knacks with him, as well as an eagle feather given to him from the A.I.S.E.S group! My mum was at the Albq conference when he was there to speak, and she said he was really nice and did a real good 'meet & greet' with all the aspiring native scientists!!
              :)

I am sure it will be a great, and safe, trip up there & back for him!!

              :)

Aside from the Oxygen leak (1 pound per minute) the launch has been delayed (scrubbed) and this is big: NASA changed thier website to reflect the fact that this isn't our first American Indian on the program to go up. It's just the one they picked to make a big deal about.

Well, no big surprise there. Any info from them is always on a "need to know" basis, and of course they figure we don't need to know that.

They are (STS-113) set to try to go up again on the 18th November...

                      A little bit more info:

Mr. Herrington is a Mission Specialist (#2) on this "trip"... They are going to work on the International Space Station on an Assembly Mission (11-A). STS-113 Expedition 5 Crew is comprosed of: Comander James Wetherbee, Pilot Paul Lockhart, Mission Specialist (#1) Michael Lopez-Alegria and of course, JOhn Herrington.

On the NASA site there are bios on all the astronauts & cosmonauts, and an explanation of what they will be doing while up in space:

                          Commander LINK and Miss Piggy!!!

The first Native in Space was Bill Pogue and he is Choctaw and flew Skylab 4 in 1974.

They should had brought in Mandaree, Stomp Dancers, flute players AND Buffy St. Marie for that feller too.

But what was the name of those two old cogers that sat in the balcony to tear up the show???
