I know. It burns me up when people make this big stink about native only participation and then you see what's acceptable simply because someone is native.

That is why we use the phrase Native American made or By Your Own Hands. We like to teach the general public about us, so that is the main reason of being Native American Made, for it is advertized as A Native American PowWow, Intertribal or not. So they expect to see Our items that we made. This is also another reason why our culture gets lost. It is lost in the world of many, for how can we preserve what we are taught from a young age if we allow others that are non native to represent their wares as Native American Made?

Just my thoughts, I don't expect everyone to view things as I do.

I was using "rubber tomahawk people" just as a name. None of these vendors actually have rubber tomahawks, but they do usually have some small bow & arrow sets, pea shooters, bracelets and necklaces for the kids. The kids can only bring a few dollars with them so the vendors try to provide something inexpensive for them to purchase. This same committee also gives all the children that attend School Day a free pass to come back with their parents some time during the weekend. These particular teachers are really good about what they show the children as far as vendors are concerned. One thing that I think most committees fail to realize is the fact that these vendors help to make a pow wow wonderful, too. The vendors for this pow wow are treated just like our own families. We love them and want them back again and again. Yah, you get some whiners, but the good ones make up for that if you let them!

Have you forgotten about the Karate Kid hand drums and the truck stop art? And I agree with the fact that vendors help the dance go well.

I wouldn't sell anything I made as being native made, and that's not what I meant. If a culture is preserved by a white man or indian man, what's the difference. It's still being carried on ,right? I'm talking about Fine quality, traditionaly learned and made, 'authentic' Indian craftwork, made by a non-native. Everything done the same by both native and white with the only difference being the race.

NAGPRA laws state that for "authentic" craft items to be sold they have to be indian made. I do not think this takes into the account the many adopted indian people or the mixed breeds. But i also dont see people pressing charges against those people either. I believe that NAGPRA is more there to protect sacred items and to stop exploitation. I personally get upset at all the made in taiwan stuff you see around, but ya know that is gonna happen. Whwn there is money to be made.....
I dont have problems with any vendor as long as they are respectful and are pretty much selling things that are respectful in itself. No confederate falg bandanas or anything ya know..

I am interested how you all felt about the gun control debate that has ensued after the Sandy Hook massacre. It seems to be getting more and more heated every day with the nation equally divided between gun owners who are vehemently opposed to any sort of regulation and those who are calling for new...

New version of PETER PAN - suggestion request
                    by Storyland Theatre
Hi, I am currently preparing a new stage version of the Peter Pan story for production in schools and children's theatres.

I thought I would nip the issue of the dated and rather thoughtless portrayal of the "Native Neverlandians" in the story as originally written by J. M....

                    I am bewildered
                    by Bewildered
It seems as if most of us Indians have given up on the pow wow trail. I use to attend no matter how few of us there were but now even the die hards are staying away. It has become the unspoken word.

The only pow wow's that I can find my people at are tribal. Is anyone else seeing this?...
