Butter tub lids work cool. Depending on where you live at any sewing or fabric shop they sell plain Quilting templates which are made of plastic.

Don't forget those plastic dividers from binders, they are rigid but soft to cut with scissors or utility knife, specially when you see the piles of binder being tossed. Oh and the make great barrette fillers and better yet book marker that you can shape!!!!!

Too thin as a good backing, it also get brittle with age. good thick stuff is easier to shape and doesn't break down as fast. Those dividers that come at the start and end of a binder that take up so little space are perfect, they are black and cut easily with any tool. I actually shape mine and go from there. Piercing through and attaching barrette clips to that surface works great, specially when I do moose hair tuffting.
