Sun Dance songs at powwows

Being friends with a guy who knows a lot of the old songs, I was sadden to hear that a couple of comptemporary groups were breaking out Sun Dance songs during contest!!!!!!
He spoke of one he heard at a recent powwow in South Dakota who did this. He told me that after they sang, the weather changed, it got real hot...
Just wondering what people think about this because for me it makes me feel real sad and disillusioned as well because my people do not Sun Dance but I respect and understand the power behind it.

This actually isn't that new of a thing, but it is the first time I've heard about it being used for contests. I know several songs that have been "converted" for pow wow use so to speak. I'm sure Jacques or Louis or Sahnish probably know a lot more songs that might fall into that category and could probably shed more light on this subject.
