Does anyone know when the first drum contest was held? Or about what era they started?

Can't speak for anything up North but there was a singing contest at the Anadarko Indian Fair about 1945. The winners were three Ponca men, Francis Eagle,Sylvester Warrior and Harry Buffalohead. The prize was $5.00. Don Whistler, the Sac & Fox host of the old Indians for Indians radio program broadcast this live from the Fair. $5.00 was also the prize for dance competition both at the Fair and at the Ed Mack Powwow outside Shawnee, OK.Cat & Dog ...Another white meat. -

I would like to inform everyone that August 5,6,7,8 is Menominee's contest pow wow. They have a drum contest of $5,000.00 for first place and a special drum contest this year Honoring Louie Sheridan Sr. for $2,000.00 winner take all. That's $7,000.00 for the champions. WOJB 88.9 FM is sponsoring the Third Annual Hand Drum Contest on February 11, 2006. It will be held at the Lac Courte Oreilles Convention Center located 4 miles southeast of Hayward on County Road B. Registration is from 11am until 5pm, the contest begins at 1pm.

Something strange going on here. First, the drum rules state that any rules can be altered, deleted or changed at any time during the weekend. Why have rules????
Next thing, the same judges are used for every song judged. ****, they're going to judge the same way each time.
