What is the worst pow wow that you have been to where a drum group didn't place that should have? I have been to a pow wow where a drum was there for all drum roll calls with their full crew for the whole weekend and singing excellent but didn't place at all. But another drum missed a roll call, missed a grand entry, missed a special, didn't have a full crew ( 6 minimum for contest they had only 4) for 1 and a 1/2 sessions but still managed to place second? hmmmm.....

    Yep Yep

I recall a certain pow wow last year where the host drum was the drum judges, and wonders that be, they're friends drums placed 1st & 2nd. Now that's "ok" except that a person from the committee emailed this one drum (who many people were shocked that they didn't place) shortly after the pow wow to tell them that the host drum had rigged up the competition and that the drum in question would have indeed placed 2nd had the host drum not put they're friends in there :JawDrop . Too little too late I'm afraid . The drum had a good time singing at the pow wow and had a good experience overall, it's just too bad to find out that that happened afterwards. What ever happened to going to powwow's and singing hard for the enjoyment and for the people? I believe it's still there, but now the thought of money is on some people's mind foremost. That's just too bad because I believe that it doesn't matter how far the drum travels, or who their friends are, it's how hard they sang, quality of the songs, did the dancers enjoy the song, etc. All the information that you would find on the drum competition ballots. Finding fair judges is the key I suppose. This is only my opinion of course, no offense to anyone. But I think we all know that it happens here and there-crooked drum competitions.

I have seen it happen all over - at big and smaller pow-wows. It makes the people who do the cheating look real bad - because the people know who the real champions are. For those who do participate in these actions, I say, shame, shame, shame!!! :NoNo :NoNo :NoNo

I have to agree with Ace on this one. I been around the trail singing and seen it happen from time to time...here and there. I definately can't say that goes for all the pow-wow's I've been to. I have been asked to run a few drum contest's myself. For famlies and pow-wow committee's. So, I have also seen the "fairness" they wanted within their contest's. Like alway's. It's a few bad instances when a group get's the "shaft" when everyone know's they should have placed. But those are the one's everyone know's about. And of course as ndn's we just have to pass it on......LOL. I'm not casting stones here. I also am a person that has to do the "you know what I heard" thing. Anyywayyz, all you can do is move on to the next pow-wow and sing your butt off....again. :Music: :Music: :Music:

Yeah I seen chit happen in singin' AND dancin'. I think it's funny when the drum groups who F--- U- think they should get FIRST REGARDLESS just because of their name and DON'T. I think they ave a tendency to talk chit about that particular pow-wow. I'm wonderin' about those NON NDN JUDGES I have seen out there. COME ON NOW!!! Isn't there a HODOWN or LINEDANCIN' contest they can JUDGE!? :Yell I also can't believe the ones who go runnin up "demanding to see the tallies" when they don't win. :36: SUCK IT UP I SAY!!!! Ya can't have it your way ALL THE TIME!!!:madhat:

I've heard several different opinios on drums and money. Where I am from, if you liked a song, you threw money on the drum. I've been told by others that putting money on the drum can be interpreted negatively. Whats the general concensus on this?

This may seem like an offbeat question, but here goes. I was noticing the other day while sitting in with some guys singing that the drum head had a couple of areas where the hide (buffalo I think) was looking like it had some spidery surface cracks. When I ran my hand over it, I could feel some of...

I was sharing some drum information with a friend yesterday.

I was telling him that I was taught not to come to the drum if you have bad feelings or don't like someone who is sitting at the drum. Because if you do, this negative energy will affect all the singers.

                I put...

                Hello folks.. heres a Topic!!
My Friends and I were discussing Whistles/Fans on Drums, and how we were taught that it is not cool to sit or join on a Drum once its been whistled, even if its your drum and you were off at the Portapotties and get there late, Once that drum or song is whistled...
