OH I like your idea with the toothpicks. That is what Indians did. They made do with what they had. So you could use embroidery thread if you have some around, but two strands since you don't have the right thread. You might even use the thin sewing thread by doubling that too. In the US especially, people aren't used to doing without...and so they would just give up. Indians look for what will work instead (like you did with the toothpicks).
